General Information and Care: Dischidia ovata (special), also known as the Watermelon Dischidia, is a wonderful vine in a terrarium. This species does best as a cascading species, meaning it should be planted higher up in a terrarium and allowed to grow down. There are very few other cascading species that do well in terrariums. This particular clone of Dischidia ovata came to us from the Paul Shirley collection and is not well circulated. It is unique from the other more common types by its lanceolate or oblanceolate leaf shape and thicker venation that appears slightly “hazy” on the leaf, not as clear and defined as the other clones. The flowers are the same being yellow to orange, striped in dark purple or brown, urceolate, without fragrance and bloom in umbels of approximately four or five. Culturally it is much the same appreciating warm temperatures, a well draining soil and bright filtered light. If grown a bit hard, it will blush a bit of color on the foliage. A neat variance to a decorative species not well circulated. Note the the second photo show a sprig of the 'normal' form of ovata for comparison.
